Group portrait of the Hawkins family, left to right: Mrs. Agnes (Anderson) Hawkins, Alfred Hawkins, Elizabeth Hawkins, Margaret Alice Hawkins, Alben Hawkins. After a term with the Royal Engineers Alben Hawkins chose a crown grant of 328 acres, 88 in Mt. Lehman, the remainder on Matsqui Prairie and settled on the Mt. Lehman property in 1874. Being its first settler, the community was nearly named for Alben but he declined and the community was named for the Lehmans.
