The aftermath of the $20,000 fire at The Highwayman neighborhood pub, located on 32450 Simon Avenue, early Saturday morning, February 17, 1979. Arson was confirmed in the wake of a $20,000 fire at The Highwayman pub. Fire Chief Al Cook told The News that an unknown arsonist(s) used bottles of flammable liquid to start a blaze in the main entrance area of the pub. The fire was discovered at 5:55 a.m. Saturday, by a patrolling Matsqui policeman. Fire Halls No.1 and 2 responded to the call, and knocked down the flames within five minutes, said Cook. The blaze damaged the foyer area and was working its way into the main building structure when firemen arrived, he noted.
